Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate… until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.
The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
This book reminded me of The Uglies series and The Hunger Games series in that it takes place in the future and their lives are controlled ‘for their own good’. In this instance, a group of people, called “The Society” dictates what everyone can eat, read, draw, learn, work, when they can marry, who they marry, when they can have kids and how many. All in order of the longest, highest quality of life.
When teens reach a certain age, they are ‘Matched’ with another person at a big ceremony where it is revealed who they will marry. They then take home a video showing them all about their match. When Cassia’s video shows her a glimpse of another man before turning to the video of her match, she questions everything that The Society has planned for her.
I always find myself wondering what I would do if I were in that situation. Would I follow along, or rebel for free agency? This was a really good read. I would recommend to any teens or adults.
