The Saga of The Entry Light

The light in the front entrance of our home was always just MEH to me.  I did not love it, but it worked, so we ignored it.  When the bulbs burnt out, we had to face the decision of what to do with it.  The light was rather dim to begin with, and a little small for my liking.  We couldn’t reach the bulbs with our ladder to change them.  If you get the really tall ladders that lean against a wall, you can’t reach the middle of the ceiling to access the electrical.  We discussed renting a ladder, but that also requires a truck or trailer to get said rented ladder home.  A simple light fixture change ended up requiring a bit of work and a few friends to lend a hand, but it was worth it in the end.

The beautiful light covered in cobwebs with no working bulbs.

The 17 foot ladder in action!
The man who does all the actual work!

The after.

I was so excited to have the new light up. All day I kept saying, it looks a million dollars better. Don’t you agree?  I decided that the light was originally hung higher so that it was centered on the window, for optimal viewing from the outside.  I decided I didn’t care about the outside view, and cared more about there being enough light to see when you walk into the house at night!  It also adds so much more light to an area of the home that doesn’t get a lot of natural light.

The things you don’t think about when you are deciding what height to hang a light fixture at.  Am I right?

How in the world did you get your husband to get up on that ladder? We have a very similar foyer with an old chandelier that desperately needs replacing, 5 out of the 6 little flame light bulbs are burned out. My husband took one look at that photo of your husband up on that gigantic ladder and just shook his head. I LOVE the new chandelier! It is beautiful!!

We’ve got a light way up high like that too, and I absolutely hate it! It is currently in need of a new lightbulb, but we hate dragging out the huge huge ladder. I love your new light! I’d love to get something similar for our house.

Hey, I’m Brooke!

I am a mom to 4 boys in Calgary, Alberta.  I love learning how things are made, singing to the radio loudly, and can’t stop talking. Fueled by diet coke and chaos, I can often be found working on a project.  You can hang out here for craft ideas and tips, games and activities to do with kids, plus FREE svg files and printables.
