The convenience of technology and tablets to entertain children in times of need is priceless. When I was pregnant with my twins I had so many doctors appointments, specialist appointments, ultrasounds, etc. that there was no way I could leave my son with a babysitter every time I needed to go somewhere. He was just at an age where he was starting to enjoy a short TV show and it helped him to sit still in waiting rooms many times.
It wasn’t long until we found some youtube songs of nursery rhymes and starting clicking on the suggested videos. There is some scary stuff out there, disguised as kids shows. I began searching for ways to make playlists and only allow him to watch the set 5 shows I pre selected, but I wasn’t able to do that. The ads and commercials were frustrating as well.
I recently learned about Kidoodle.TV which is an ad-free streaming app where all the content is kid friendly. You can set which shows you like, or don’t like, so you can block specific shows that drive the parents crazy (Caillou anyone?). Not only is it kid friendly, there are really fun shows I remember watching as a kid. I cringe at calling them Vintage or retro. However, Inspector Gadget, He-Man, Care Bears, and other great shows are on there. I love watching my childhood favorites with my children. I think the more simple animations is appealing to the younger kids and easier for them to understand. If you want to limit the amount of shows your kids watch, there is also an option to set time limits per day. Its great that as a parent you don’t have to be the bad guy, it just doesn’t “work” anymore!
