Spruce Upholstery
A while back I joined in an effort to reupholster a vintage sofa and chair with my sister in law.  It sat untouched forever because we were too scared we would ruin it. I remember scouring the internets for tutorials, and there were a few, but the biggest hurdle was that every furniture piece has its own quirks, so unless somebody has done the exact same style of chair, upholstery tutorials online don’t really help.

I found confidence in reading books from the library (you know, what we did before the world of blog tutorials?) and I found the urge to begin.  After the stress of that job was over (stress only in the beginning because it was easy once we got going) I even attempted a second round of reupholstering.  Again, I had to make it up as I went because I couldn’t find a tutorial with the same tub style of chair that I had. Remember the chairs and my secret handy upholstery tips and tools I shared?
So I have always perused book shelves for the best upholstery books I could find.  I would love to be able to transform a chair or sofa without vomit inducing anxiety.  Spruce is a real life upholstery shop in Austin Texas, and Amanda Brown has created so many amazing projects that she shows us on her site.  Luckily for us, she is sharing her knowledge and experience in her new book Spruce – A Step By Step Guide To Upholstery.  I jumped at the chance to read it because I have so much to learn and want to learn more.  The book takes you through 5 different types of chairs to reupholster.  with how-to’s, inspiration photos, and colorful illustrations to guide you along the way.  When you read the book, you will have the confidence to take on a fun upholstery project.

The Spruce Ugliest Chair Contest!

If you upload a photo of an ugly chair on Storey Publishings Facebook Post – one winner will recieve an upholstery hand tool kit ($250 value), a $200 gift certificate for fabric from Spruce, a custom design recommendations from Amanda Brown, and a signed copy of the book.  Hurry now though, because the contest closes December 1st.

Check it out, and feel free to share any projcets here that you would like to tackle.  I have a need for a new project in my life!

Brooke - Brooklyn Berry Designs

Hey, I’m Brooke!

I am a mom to 4 boys in Calgary, Alberta.  I love learning how things are made, singing to the radio loudly, and can’t stop talking. Fueled by diet coke and chaos, I can often be found working on a project.  You can hang out here for craft ideas and tips, games and activities to do with kids, plus FREE svg files and printables.
