I love to crochet borders onto recieving blankets and think they make great gifts for a newborn baby.  These blankets with crocheted edges are my absolute favorite to give and to use for my own babies.  I have posted a few of my crochet projects before, including a crocheted bow headband, crochet baby ugg boots, and some other receiving blankets with crocheted edges.

This blanket you see today is a big first for me, this is the first time I have done a few new things:
  • added an extra layer (so you go around the entire blanket 3 times)
  • added a second color
  • made up my own pattern
Crochet Edging Crochet Edging
Its not an overly intricate design, but I figured with the two colors, I didn’t want it to be so busy.  I love using these blankets to swaddle my babies.  I love them that much more when I know they are crocheted by my mom, grandma, or myself.  I think it makes a much more thoughtful gift.

The pattern

The blankets I buy come with an edging pre punched that I can crochet into.  You could also do this yourself with a sewing machine and a wing needle, or buy a Sharp Crochet Hook that you can punch through the fabric as you go.  All the options work, the pre punched is the easiest to do, but hardest to find.
Round 1: SC around, slip stitch to join.
Round 2: Ch1.  Skip 4 stitches, 4 DC into next stitch.  1 SC into next stitch.  Skip 4 stitches.  Repeat all the way around and fasten off.
** You can leave the blanket as is, this is a simple fan crochet edge.  The next part is where I added the next color.**
Starting with your second color, fasten into a space between two fans. Chain 3.  3 DC into the same stitch.  CH 2.  3 DC into the next space.  Repeat around and fasten off.

Its funny that you ask because I kind of made it up as I went, based on what looked right. Let me see if I can write it out, and I will for sure email it to you.

Looking for a different crochet pattern for flannel blankets w/ hemstitching for babies that is only 1 round. Presently using the x and o pattern which is only 1 round. Doing blankets for humanitarian project where I finish 3 blankets per week. Fast and simple!

Ah yes, sometimes fast and simple is the best. I have also done an edge where I single crocheted around, but added the pico stitch every 5 stitches. So one round only. I am impressed you would crochet blanket edges for a humaintarian project – I like to do those as flannel blankets with the ragged / fringe edges.

It is two pieces of flannel, stitched wrong sides together.

What is the reason for double row of pre-punched holes on a handkerchief? Do you know how I would work it; which row would I start with first?
