The Rug Rules – Online Design

A client asked me to help her decide on a color, pattern, and size for her living room rug.  Between us there are 6 boys, so pardon the chaos of them in the pictures.

The current rug is on loan from her mother, but it is a good bench mark for size.  This rug is about 5′ x 7′ and the rug size I suggest would be a 7′-6″ x 9′-6″ so it would be twice as wide, but the same height.  Does that make sense?  So, the curtains are a french toile in a dark grey and cream.  The adjacent dining room has a bold pattern painted on using a wall stencil, so the pattern of a rug needs to blend these two styles.

When choosing a size of rug for a living room the must have is for the rug to reach under the legs of the couch.  I think people tent to err on the side of too small because its less expensive.  When it doubt, I can normally say get the bigger size of rug.  The rug needs to be large enough to go underneath the legs of the sofa while still being centered in the room.  The tough situation in this room specifically is that if it gets too big, it will encroach on the hall way space.  Nothing would be more awkward than walking down a hall with one foot on a rug and the other on wood.  Slanty Shanty!

Phew thats a lot of rugs. Which would you choose?  I like the last rug A LOT (#6), but with three small boys, it probably won’t stay clean that long.  I think my all time favorites would be the first grey rug (#1) and the blue and gold ikat (#5) just because its such a different color.
