Read how we started this shared teen boys room makeover journey here!
As a designer, I find that designing for my own house is the hardest task to take on. My ability to work in many different styles is a skill when designing spaces for other people that becomes a hindrance when making decisions for your own spaces.
There is something about a finished room that helps create that feeling of home and my children notice this as well and it surprises me that they do! This space has been the hodge podge room for style and I made it a priority to get this room to a space that looks and feels cozy.
I know other people struggle with the small decisions in their own home decor so I thought I would share my thought process in how I came up with the space we have now. I hope this helps someone else in their own room makeover decisions.
The Room Before
As a quick refresh, this is the room when we bought the house.

And the rough looking place we started with.
A Fresh Start
After painting the walls, adding a board and batten feature wall, and getting new beds and matching bedding, this is where we were left with the room.
How to decorate it became my next challenge.
Shared Boys Room Design Ideas:
Here are the ideas I have collected on Pinterest for many many years.
After living with the room like this for a while I started thinking the featured wall in this room just needed something more. Texture? Pattern? Wallpaper? I think yes.
Boys Room Wallpaper
These are just some images I created as inspiration, so know they are just giving us the rough ideas.
This modern black and white mountain scene was a full wall mural that would have needed to be cut down to fit on my wall. I liked the look overall but didn’t want the tree line at the bottom. It would have needed to be completely custom made. We also tried the artwork there and it just didnt work, the art stuck out too far at the bottom of the ledge and looked strange.
I loved the idea of this light grey plaid wallpaper, but didn’t want more grey. There wasn’t an alternate color option with this paper to go with a green or navy stripe so it was voted out for that reason. It looks good with the striped duvet cover on the left bed, but I didn’t want to be committed to that bedding forever.
This light blue plaid wallpaper was a better color, but the background color was too cream when we got the sample into the room. So close, but not quite right.
I love the idea of a wallpaper to look like wood planks. They are really trendy right now and a wallpaper version would be so much easier. I really liked this Timber wallpaper and would have been so happy with it.
Eventually I decided the most timeless look would be a vertical board looking pattern, remining me of a rustic cabin from summer camp. I liked the lighter color, helping keep this very dark feeling bedroom as light as possible.
This vertical plank wallpaper is called Allison Wallpaper from Wallblush. I am in love!
