Geyser at Yellowstone National Park

National Parks are the highlight reel of the coolest places to see in America, and protected for us to enjoy them. How cool is that? The best way to see them all is to print off the free printable national parks checklist and head out on a road trip to explore!

What is a National Park?

A national park is a landmark set aside and protected so that it remains intact for future generations. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, which created the world’s first national park.

The national park service is the group responsible for caring for the parks. This encompasses the duties to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations”. Which means that every national historic site should look the same for our kids and grandchildren as they do today.

How Many National Parks Are there?

There are 63 named national parks that cover 50 states, the District of Columbia and United States territories. There are also 423 national park sites (or national park units) that include historic sites, monuments, and memorials. These are not technically national parks, but fall under the park sites.

National Parks Passport Books

For anyone who likes a unique souvenir or having a collection, you will love the passport books. This logbook is a place to collect stamps (officially called cancellations) from each of the national parks. They are typically located at the visitor centers and park stores.

Insider Tip: Some parks have more than one location to get stamps, and occasionally, there are secret stamps you have to ask for!

That bottom left stamp with old faithful is just an example of a “secret stamp”. It’s in the gift shop at old faithful and you can only get it if you ask at the counter for it. The stamp is SUPER old so they keep it behind the counter to keep it safe. Rumor has it there used to be a second one but someone stole it.

There are two different books you can choose from. The smaller passport book is great for people who might do a bit of traveling but don’t ever plan on hitting all the stops. It just has pages within each section where you can collect whatever stops you visit.

The big passport book has a designated spot for every location and allows you to collect stamps from other National Park Service (NPS) sites, including national monuments, historic sites, and more.

Fun Facts About National Parks

  • California’s Sequoia National Park is home to the largest living single-stem tree in the world, the wonderfully named General Sherman. The tree is approximately 275 feet tall and weighs approximately 1,900 metric tons.
  • When a giant sequoia tree fell and blocked a road in Sequoia National Park in California in 1937, the National Park Service simply created a tunnel through the 275-foot by 21-foot tree.
  • Ribbon Falls in Yosemite is nine times taller than Niagara Falls
  • Utah has five national parks are all within easy driving distance of each other, which means that you can cross off five national parks from your list on just one trip.
What is the most visited national park?

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park with more than 9 million guests per year, followed by Grand Canyon National Park, which gets more than 4 million visits per year.

What is the least visited national park?

Alaska is home to one of the least visited national parks: Kobuk Valley National Park receives just 3,000 visitors per year.
