What is a National Park?
A national park is a landmark set aside and protected so that it remains intact for future generations. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, which created the world’s first national park.

The national park service is the group responsible for caring for the parks. This encompasses the duties to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations”. Which means that every national historic site should look the same for our kids and grandchildren as they do today.
How Many National Parks Are there?
There are 63 named national parks that cover 50 states, the District of Columbia and United States territories. There are also 423 national park sites (or national park units) that include historic sites, monuments, and memorials. These are not technically national parks, but fall under the park sites.

National Parks Passport Books
For anyone who likes a unique souvenir or having a collection, you will love the passport books. This logbook is a place to collect stamps (officially called cancellations) from each of the national parks. They are typically located at the visitor centers and park stores.
Insider Tip: Some parks have more than one location to get stamps, and occasionally, there are secret stamps you have to ask for!

There are two different books you can choose from. The smaller passport book is great for people who might do a bit of traveling but don’t ever plan on hitting all the stops. It just has pages within each section where you can collect whatever stops you visit.

The big passport book has a designated spot for every location and allows you to collect stamps from other National Park Service (NPS) sites, including national monuments, historic sites, and more.
