All About Beard Balm and Beard Oil
A great beard is more than just long facial hair, the skin underneath that beard needs some attention as well. Skin issues such as dry skin and skin irritation can lead to beard dandruff, and that hair can get in the way! Because facial hair is often coarse it can also be itchy and scratchy. The answer to all of this is a beard oil and luckily it is something that is pretty inexpensive to make at home.
Its very simple to use. Just apply a few drops of oil to your beard after a shower, followed by combing with a beard comb.
Beard oil is a mixture of carrier oils and essential oils. These mixture of different oils will keep beard hair soft and manageable while moisturizing the skin which reduces itch. The combination of different oils can be customized for various skin types and health benefits. You can make your own beard oil with this easy recipe and learn about the key ingredients to adjust it to your own needs.
Read each pro tip below on the best essential oils and combination of carrier oils, then create your own recipes!
What are carrier oils?
Carrier oils are the base oil for skin products and are often used to dilute essential oils when being applied directly to the skin. The most common are Jojoba, argan oil, or grape seed oil. These can all be used on sensitive skin.
- Jojoba oil is is the miracle worker of skin care. It is a moisturizing oil that is non-allergenic and easily absorbed. Its chemically similar to the natural oils that our skin produces. It won’t clog your pres or irritate even sensitive skin.
- Argan oil can be used on all skin types. Its good for moisturizing and healing of the skin.
- Sweet almond oil is soothing and hydrating. Its typically easier to find and less expensive, which makes it a good product to start out with for your first time.
- Coconut oil is great for dry skin especially in the dry winter months.
- Grapeseed oil is good for acne prone skin because it has a natural astringent in it.
- Castor oil, apricot oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, and vitamin E oil are also used often.
The best combination for carrier oils I have found is 50% jojoba oil and 50% sweet almond oil.
Essential Oils
There are many essential oil scents and brands for you to choose from. For anything that will be applied direclty to the skin I like to use natural ingredients. You can choose the esential oil blend to use depending on the your needs.
Each different blend of oils can be combined for their properties or just because you like the scent.
Lemongrass has a energizing scent and strengthens the hair follicles to help prevent breakage and hair loss.
Peppermint oil has a cooling effect and its scent helps to wake you up!
Eucalyptus prevents skin irritation
Cedarwood oil helps with acne and adds shine. It also has manly smell.
Tea tree oil is a great oil for acne prone skin.
Orange oil fights inflamation and wrinkles and that citrus scent is amazing.

Supplies Needed For Beard Oil:
- 1 oz oil dropper. This amber glass eye dropper is my favorite. Smaller batches are good for testing scents. I like the smaller bottles so you can experiment with scents and not get stuck with something you don’t love. When you find the perfect recipe make a larger batch in a larger bottle.
- Base oil. Basically it waters down the strong oils for your skin. You can use coconut oil (although it would be more a balm at room temperature), vitamin E oils, Argan oil, or jojoba. Whatever you have on hand will work.
- Essential Oils – there is no wrong choice here. I used peppermint and lemongrass (and debated lavender). Great combinations include coconut oil with peppermint.

DIY Beard Oil Frequently Asked Questions
2-3 drops of oil is a good amount to start with.
Apply beard oil after each shower and any time your skin feels itchy or dry.
The best time to apply beard oil is straight after a shower. This is because your beard is completely clean and your pores have opened up from the steam, making for easier absorption of the product.
