Are you looking for creative ways to transform the unused space under the stairs? These fantastic ideas will inspire you to put that awkward space to good use.

Ideas for the Space Under the Stairs

This angled space under the stairs is often used as a place to store any random boxes or items from around the house, but there are so many ways to transform this extra space into something customized to your own needs.

Create a cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair, bookshelf, and warm lighting.

A stack of comfy cushions is the ideal spot to curl up with your favorite book. A bold graphic wallpaper, bright colorful shelves, and a couple nugget couches make for a fun and funky reading nook (via @brooke__krystin)

The built in storage is amazing for tiny little toys, but the added height takes away head room for taller kids. The board and batten detail on the back is a great style addition. (via @three_plusme)

This under stairs space easily doubles as a bench for a small dining space when paired with a small table. All you need is a cup of coffee to keep on the table. Source.

I love that they managed to fit a window into this small space as well. I don’t think this would pass building code without a railing.

2. Build a mini home office or study area with a desk, chair, and storage for books and supplies.

No designated home office in your house? No problem. Transforming wasted space into a cozy workspace! Love this desk built in under the stairs!

Design A Playroom Under The Stairs

with toy storage, bean bag chairs, and a small table for activities.

This is modern farmhouse playroom in the basement is my literal childhood dream come true. The two custom C chairs are a genius idea to work around a support beam that couldn’t be moved. Image Source.

The best projects happen at the spur of the moment. This one grew out of a different project starting with the need to place interior walls to block access to the furnace and water heater in an unifinished basement… and from that came an under the stairs playhouse. What better design choice for a room under the stairs than a harry potter themed play room. The narrow console table holds a collection of books. The brick looking wallpaper is a great idea for transforming the space and notice the vintage style lantern? Perfect for reading.

Who wouldn’t love a secret playhouse under the stairs? The triangular shaped wall is painted with magnetic paint to become a space to display your childs latest works of art or use magnetic toys.

The stenciled wall creates a fun and playful look without being too loud or vibrant.

Incorporates an art area, play kitchen complete with its own kid size dining area. How cute is this!

This playhouse was built in the space blocked out for a fireplace in the basement. I love that this is such a fun and creative solution for a weird space.

How adorable are the dutch door and polka dot wallpaper?

Install a wine rack or mini bar for entertaining guests. wet bar, wine room

Wine cellars can be built in almost any area of your home including a walk-in closet, basement, or even under your stairs! What a great way to use the space.

Under Stair Storage Idea

Add this under stairs storage idea for maximum additional storage in this empty space. Custom shelves or cabinets for shoes, coats, and other items are the best if your stair case is near the front door. Source.

Create a pet retreat with a cozy bed, toys, and food and water bowls.
